i was thinking between 3-5 seconds or people will stop reading or paying attention. anyone have any experience in this?

Yeah u re rigth not more then tht.. cos visitors want every thing quick u can’t get them bored with ur page, u should try to make fast/friendly site

Just a note of caution, be very conscious of your visitor’s time. 5 seconds might not seem like much, but count it out…I just did and got bored by about 2.
Your site serves a purpose. Try not to hold back visitors from getting to the information your are offering. Does this flash movie help or hurt the purpose of the site? I’ve never seen an opening movie that helped…it is just one more thing I need to click past.
This general rule of thumb — does this feature help or hurt my goal of delivering my message — works for just about any feature.
Only you can really answer how long it should run by really delving into the interaction of your site.
