Standing for P.ersonal U.rban M.obility and A.ccessibility, a prototype was released Tuesday, April 7th in New York for a public demonstration. This unlikely off-spring of the two disparate companies is either a visionary solution for the crowded streets of urban areas around the globe (claims made by the earlier Segway owner), or a hail-mary project that the executives of GM hope can attract some positive coverage and help their current dismal situation. General Motors is currently preparing for bankruptcy, as a June 1 deadline to reach agreements with its debt holders approaches. This newest electric device is designed to fit two individuals, can travel up to 35 m.p.h., and has a charge distance of 35 miles. Adding some technological features, the PUMA is expected to carry real-time traffic information, akin to the OnStar system for automobiles, and sensors that prevent the vehicle from bumping into nearby objects. The prototype runs on lithium-ion batteries. GM and Segway have said that the pricing for the PUMA will be between one-quarter and one-third the cost of a typical car.
